Gulmarg, famously known as the "Meadow of flowers" is one of the
premier hill resorts. It is situated in the district Baramulla of Jammu Kashmir
and about 52 kms away from Srinagar. Originally it is known by the name of "Gaurimarg",
it was actually named after the goddess Gauri, Lord Shiva’s better half. It is believed
to be discovered by the romantic Kashmiri king Sultan yousuf shah chak in the 16th
century who was dumbfounded by its grassy slopes and enormous variety of wild flowers.

Another main attraction of Gulmarg is the famous shrine of sufi saint "Baba
Reshi", every year thousands of devotees visit this holy shrine to
pay homage to this great personality.
Today Gulmarg is not just a mountain resort but also a hub of winter sports which
makes it must to visit Gulmarg at least once in a while. The adventurous sports
that Gulmarg offers are:
- Skiing: The inception of ski resort in Gulmarg was laid by the
Britishers in 1927 when India was still in the clutches of Great Britain, skiing
at Gulmarg in those days had become very popular and therefore the resort would
host two major skiing events every year on Easter and Christmas.
Gulmarg receives its first annual snowfall during the month of December and shortly
after that the skiing season commences which continues till early April and therefore
thousands of tourists visit Gulmarg to experience the thrill of skiing. The slopes
of Gulmarg are ideal for the beginners and instructors are also available for the
purpose of guiding the beginners.
- Heli-skiing: This adventurous and exciting sport was introduced
in Gulmarg in year 1980 in association with the eminent French skier, Sylvian Saudan.
For Heli-skiing skiers are taken on the top of the mountain ridges via helicopters
from where they ski down the immense snow covered slopes.
- Snow Boarding: Snow boarding is another thrilling sport that Gulmarg
offers, it needs no skill, just a board which is tied around person’s shoes and
then allowed to descend down the snow covered slippery slopes.
- Sledge: The most thrilling and exciting sport is the riding of
sledges and therefore is popular among the tourists.
- Tobogganning: This sport attracts a lot of tourist attention, it
involves a wooden snow board which is taken uphill and then allowed to slide downhills.
